It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the beautiful Lake District is one of the most festive destinations in the UK at Christmas. Crackling log fires, incredible winter scenery and cheery locals who love getting in to the yuletide spirit!
If you're visiting The Pheasant this December you'll be spoilt for choice with a calendar of Christmas activities and festive fun near the hotel and right across the region. Join in the celebrations at these local events:
Taste Cumbria Christmas Market, Cockermouth
Cumbria's favourite food festival gets a sprinkling of Christmas cheer with a weekend market held in Cockermouth on 8 and 9 December. The main streets of our local town will be packed with marquees and stalls showcasing the best in artisan foods, drinks and craft brands. Wrap up warm and spend a day ticking off your Christmas list – family and friends will love receiving gifts from independent Cumbrian brands. And don’t forget to stock up on foodie treats for the festive break.
Christmas Art Fair, Rheged
On Saturday 8 December over 30 local artists, photographers, potters, sculptors, print-makers and more will descend on the Rheged Centre in Penrith for a Christmas Art Fair. Staged by the Eden Valley Artist Network, this is the place to find unique handcrafted Christmas gifts and see some of the artists in action creating their work. Entry is free and there’s live Christmas music.
Lowther Castle, near Penrith
One of our favourite local attractions Lowther Castle has a host of creative activities celebrating the festive season. This year it’s running ‘A Winter Pom-Pom Trail’, a storytelling walk through the gardens for young visitors following Tammy O’Shanter the Lowther Gingerbread Girl and her search for the perfect pom-pom for her woolly hat. Everyone who completes the walk gets a tasty gingerbread treat! The Castle is also running a range of Christmas holiday workshops for adults including willow-weaving, modern calligraphy and festive wreath making.
Beauty and the Beast at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick
Keswick’s gorgeous Theatre by the Lake is welcoming Beauty and the Beast to its Christmas calendar this year, and it’s a far cry from the sentimental Disney adaptation. Theatre director Laurence Boswell takes the French fairytale back to its dark brooding roots with an incredible cast and lively performance of music, dance and songs. The perfect ‘grown up’ pantomime this Christmas, Beauty and the Beast runs until 12 January 2019. https://www.theatrebythelake.com/production/17320/Beauty--the-Beast
Windermere Christmas Celebration
Another festive street event, Windermere’s celebration is held on 8 and 9 December with a German market feel and food, drinks and gifts galore across the weekend. Brass bands and musical performers are scheduled throughout the weekend and there’s even a visit from Father Christmas and his reindeer. At night the festivities continue in Windermere's bars and pubs.
