If you fancy a break from the fells during your stay at The Pheasant, our nearest town of Cockermouth is thriving with independent boutiques and local treasures for a happy day’s browsing.
Cockermouth has one of the best selection of shops in the region, clustered around Main Street and Market Place and close to the town’s tourist attractions. Be sure to visit our favourite retailers:
Local fashion boutique Annabelle’s has been styling the women of Cockermouth for over 30 years. Housed in a gorgeous Georgian building on Main Street, Annabelle’s stocks a range of diverse designers including Brodie Cashmere and James Lakeland – it’s the perfect place to find an outfit for dinner at our Fell Restaurant! Zebra clothing on South Street has a great selection of eveningwear too and the town has lovely children’s clothing shops including Riff Raff Apparel and Little Treasures.
Furniture and homewares
Cockermouth is a goldmine for antique finds and unique homewares. We love a good browse around Dachshund Vintage Interiors on Market Place – always full of eclectic pieces and up-cycled creations. Cockermouth Antiques Market is a fabulous place to search for buried treasure; an old school bazaar of trash and trinkets, creaking floorboards, hushed whispers and staff with a knowledge deserving of the Antiques Roadshow! And the Percy House Gallery on Market Place sells beautiful ceramics, cushions, art, furniture and lovely gifts as well housing exhibitions from visiting artists.
With days of walking in all weathers ahead of you, it might be time to upgrade your outdoors gear during your stay at The Pheasant. Luckily Cockermouth has an excellent selection of outdoors shops including Edge Lifewear and Lake District Outdoor where you can pick up everything from walking boots and waterproofs to backpacks and tents. Bookworms should make a beeline for the New Bookshop, a cosy haven filled with tomes of all types serving excellent tea, coffee and cakes. The Toy Shop in Main Street has fun treats for all ages, from the vintage retro games to new-fangled toys and children’s gifts.
We also love Fagans (51 Main St) for memorable gifts from your stay in the Lakes, I Do (16 Main St) for blushing brides on the hunt for the perfect wedding dress and Cockermouth Art & Craft (6 Main St) for its quaint ambience and creative craft supplies.
