What’s the best way to beat the winter blues? Book your next trip and plan fun activities for when you get there! We're ideally located near some of the Lake District's best events – here are our top picks for 2018:

Words by the Water, Keswick 9-18 March
One for the bookworms, this festival of words and ideas has a varied programme of talks and workshops set against the beautiful backdrop of Derwentwater and the western fells. This year's highlights include newsreader Michael Buerk and Booker prize-winning novelist Ben Okri. View the full programme here:

Keswick Mountain Festival, Keswick 8-10 June
KMF is one of the UK's biggest and best-loved events for outdoors enthusiasts whether you're a keen cyclist, beginner fell walker, occasional kayaker or triathlete competitor – or you just fancy a weekend outside in incredible scenery watching great sports. Find out more here: http://www.keswickmountainfestival.co.uk/

Woolfest, Cockermouth 22 – 23 June
Like the name suggests, this two-day event celebrates all things woolly in the county with a sheep-farming heritage dating back thousands of years. Stallholders and visitors travel from around the world and the event includes live sheep shearing, rare breed parades and textile workshops. https://www.woolfest.co.uk/whats-on/programme.htm

Derwentwater Regatta, 7-8 July
King Pocky's Regatta is known as Cumbria's quirkiest water sports event - where else would you see stone-skimming and bathtub racing as competitor sports? There's a range of ‘proper’ regatta activities to choose from too, from kayaking and canoeing to paddleboarding and traditional boating. It's run by the National Trust in the spirit of Joseph Pocklington, the eccentric owner of Derwent Island in the 18th century:

Cockermouth Agricultural Show, 4 August
There’s nothing more Cumbrian than an agricultural show and Cockermouth’s
is one of the best. Make a day of it and catch working sheep dog demonstrations, livestock viewings, ancient farm machinery exhibitions and Cumberland wrestling. The beer tent is a big hit too:

National Dog Day, 26 August
Like us, the Lake District National Park authority loves four-legged visitors!
They’re celebrating National Dog Day with a programme of suggested dog walks in the National Park and ‘Paws for a Drink’ areas at various Tourist Information Centres (including Keswick near us) serving free doggy biscuits and water. Plan your pooch-cation here:

Grasmere Lakeland Sports & Show, 28 August
This historic Lakeland show is 168 years old and showcases the best of rural life and classic Cumbrian pursuits, from fell running and tug of war to dog shows and paragliding demonstrations.

Taste Cockermouth, September (dates TBC)
Three days of foodie heaven in Cockermouth, Taste takes over the historic town with farmer’s markets, pop-up cafes, restaurants and bars, cooking demonstrations and master classes and a beer festival to wash down the variety of cuisines. The full programme will be announced in the coming months:

Lakes Alive Festival, 8-10 September
This festival brings world-class art to unexpected locations – last year’s event included an incredible light installation in Kendal Castle and an interactive tour through the South Lakeland skies by Cumbrian astronomer Stuart Atkinson. Lakes Alive is based in Kendal but brings its sights and sounds to the wider Lake District too:

Taste Cumbria Christmas Market, December (dates TBC)
Cockermouth flies the foodie flag once again each December, hosting the Taste Cumbria Christmas Market across a weekend in early December. The event includes a festive food fair with mouth-watering treats and mulled wine, giant marquees packed with Christmas gift stalls, a fairground, beer and fizz tent and street party musicians.
